We all want to believe in the “happily ever after” fairytale love story, right? Of course! But that’s not always the way things go. #shockingnotshocking Maybe it’s because we’ve seen what our parents’ generation went through with half of all marriages ending in divorce…maybe it’s because we see all these crazy fights over stuff when celebs split. Either way, millennials are choosing to get prenups at a record rate.
Why? A few reasons.
· For one, couples are now waiting a few years later to actually bite that “forever” bullet. The average couple is now getting married at age 29 (versus 27 just a few years ago). The older we are, the more assets we have to protect.
· Another consideration is that our generation is the one that entered the workforce during the 2008 recession. We know how tough it is to carve something out of nothing and therefore we have an interest in protecting what assets we’ve already gotten for ourselves.
Look, I know this isn’t the love story that sappy movies want you to believe, but we should totally give ourselves major props for being SMART about life decisions. A prenup makes perfect sense and protects our future. It’s fine to build together as a couple, but you also need to look out for number one. I bet most of our parents wish they had been as bold.
