Study: Scrolling Through Social Media Doesn’t Give A Mental Break

Lots of us turn to our phones when we need a quick break from work or a project we’re tackling, but it turns out, it’s not giving us the mental boost we’re looking for. Anew studyfinds that the “break” we think we’re getting while scrolling through our phone actually has the opposite effect.

The research shows that grabbing your phone for a little stimulation between other tasks can have a negative effect on mental efficiency. In the study, participating college undergrads who took a phone break mid-task took 19% longer to finish the task and solved 22% fewer problems than those who spent a break on a computer or on paper.

Study authors conclude that phones have this affect because “even just seeing your phone activates thoughts of checking messages, connecting with people, access to ever-refilling information and more.” They explain that people “have half a mind on their phones at all times” and when we use our phones for a minute during a break, that only gets worse. So if you really want to boost mental stamina, take a break from the phone.

Starbucks Debuts Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew

Pumpkin Spice Latte fans, today’s your day - the day the PSL returns to Starbucks for the season. But not everyone is ready to dive into a hot fall drink since it’s still summer out there, so the coffee chain is introducing a new pumpkin drink as well: the Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew.

This is the first pumpkin drink from Starbucks that’s only available cold and it’s their first take on the PSL since it arrived in stores the first time way back in 2003. The Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew is made with Starbucks cold brew coffee, vanilla, and a float of pumpkin cream cold foam - which is vanilla sweet cream frothed and mixed with a little pumpkin spice sauce - and it’s sprinkled with pumpkin spice topping.

Joining the new Pumpkin Cold Brew and the PSL on menus today is the fall food - which includes the Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin and the Pumpkin Scone. Can you smell fall now?

With summer winding down, before you know it the holidays will be here, which means it’s time to start thinking about your holiday travel. It’s no secret that holiday travel can be expensive, but when you book can go a long ways towards how much you actually shell out to go away Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Well, Expedia just released their tips for the best time to book your holiday vacation, so if you’re planning a getaway you may want to listen up.

They also note that the best time to fly for the cheapest deal is on Thanksgiving Day, where travelers paid about $100 less than other days.

For Christmas, the best time to book is between November 23rdand December 9th, which saves travelers about 15%. The cheapest day to fly is Christmas Eve, which saves folks $100 compared to traveling the Saturday before the holiday. And watch out for December 21st, which is predicted to be the busiest travel day leading up to the holiday.
