Drinking Red Wine Is Good For Your Gut
We’re always a little skeptical when a new study comes out boasting the health benefits of drinking alcohol, but there’s a lot of research suggesting that drinking wine in moderation can be good for us. And anew studyfrom Kings College in London finds that drinking an occasional glass of red wine can be good for gut health.
Researchers interviewed close to a thousand (916) female twins in the U.K. about their eating and drinking habits and gut bacteria and compared those findings to the results of similar studies done in the U.S. and Belgium. And they found that red wine drinkers have “increased gut microbiota diversity” - which is a sign of good gut health - compared to white wine, beer, and liquor drinkers.
The “good” microbes linked to drinking red wine may be due to the polyphenols found in red wine. These are naturally found in lots of fruits and vegetables and they have beneficial properties, including antioxidants. So if you’re going to drink, study authorCaroline Le Royadvises, “red wine is the one to pick” because of the positive effect on gut microbes, which she says “may in turn help weight and risk of heart disease.”
But this doesn’t mean we should all go out and down a bottle of red, researchers say drinking red wine once every couple weeks is enough to have positive gut health effects.

Starbucks Puts A Limit On Drink Modifications
If you’re usual Starbucks order is a latte with 15 espresso shots or 25 pumps of caramel syrup, you’ve probably already noticed that the coffee chain has made a change recently. Starbucks has updated its app to prevent customers from adding the same “modifier” - including syrup, purée, scoops of fruit, or espresso shots - more than 12 times.
It’s a change that won’t affect too many customers, because most of us don’t order drinks with massive amounts of a single ingredient. But those who used to enjoy getting ultra specific about 25 pumps of vanilla syrup or 16 Stevias in your drink using the app to order will likely miss that luxury. The new rule is definitely barista-approved, because they often get asked to make complicated orders from a “secret menu” of drinks customers invent.
"I think it will help when it comes to mobile orders," one Starbucks employee tells Business Insider. "People seem to be as extra as they possibly can be through the app because they don't have to sound stupid asking us for all the mods."
So now if you absolutely must have 20 pumps of white mocha in your coffee, you can get it, but you’ll have to ask the barista for it face-to-face.
