Study: Dogs Feel Stress When Owners Do

Dog owners know that nothing is better for cheering you up when you’re having a bad day than your four-legged friend. Their judgement-free love and support keeps us going like nothing else. But arecent studyfinds that when dog owners feel stressed, their pooch may feel it, too.

Researchers from Linköping University in Sweden studied how stress levels in dogs are affected by their owners. They followed a group of people who own border collies or Shetland sheepdogs and measured the levels of cortisol - a stress hormone - in both the dogs and their humans. It turns out, their levels are synched. Dog owners with high cortisol levels had dogs with high cortisol levels, so if the owner is stressed, the dog is feeling it as well.

This research could help scientists in the future to determine which dog breeds are a good match for people with high levels of stress. “If we learn more about how different types of dogs are influenced by humans, it will be possible to match dog and owner in a way that is better for both, from a stress-management point of view,” explains study authorLina Roth. “It may be that certain breeds are not so deeply affected if their owner has a high stress level.”

People Who Find The Best Parking Spots Are More Patient:The next time you drive with someone who won't look for the perfect parking spot in a parking lot, remind them of this study. Finding the perfect parkingspot when going out is never an easy thing and depending on who is driving, will determine what kind of parking spot you get. Seems that a recent study found that there are three basic strategies that we use in finding that perfect parking space in crowded lots. The first approach utilized is by people who drive right up to where they're going, hoping they'll find an amazing spot right in front. The next is by the people who do the opposite and just grab the first spot they see, no matter how far away it is and walk. And the last approach is used by people who split the difference. They might not grab a terrible spot at the back of the parking lot but they also don't try to get an incredible spot. They'll grab one that's in the middle. So at the end of the day, the study found that it's better to hunt for that perfect and amazing parking spot than just grab the first one you see and walk. Over the course of your life, you'll save more time by going for better spots. Even though they might get denied when they go to the front of the lot, on average, they get where they're going faster than people who grab a far spot and walk.
