First Ever All-Female Spacewalk Happening This Month

The first all-female spacewalk is set to happen on October 21stwith astronautsChristina KochandJessica Meir, after a previous attempt was postponed because of a “spacesuit availability” issue. NASA has confirmed that the first all-female spacewalk will be part of a series of 10 planned spacewalks, which they’re calling a “spacewalk bonanza.” These start this week and will be continuing over the next three months, according to the space agency.

Both Koch and Meir have both trained in medium-sized suits and it’s been confirmed that two medium suits will be available for their spacewalk.Brandi Deanwith NASA’s Public Affairs Office explains that they do their best to anticipate the sizes of spacesuits astronauts will need based on the sizes they wore while training on the ground, but sizes may change when they’re in orbit because of the effects of microgravity on the body.

Koch will be doing three spacewalks in October and she’ll stay on the International Space Station until February 2020, which will make her time there the longest single spaceflight by a woman. Meir will spend over six months on the station. The women have been training together for the last six years and we’re ready to see them make history in the first all-female spacewalk.
