Get Ready For No-Spend November

You’ve probably heard of No-Shave November, but what about No-Spend November? The idea is basically to cut back on buying anything that isn’t a necessity for the month. And after 30 days of being frugal, you’ll have a better handle on your finances before the holidays roll around in December.

So where do you start? Try these tips to help you save money during No-Spend November.

  • Remove temptations- Unsubscribe from your favorite stores’ emails about sales and deals and try to avoid shopping situations that could lead you to spend.
  • Plan out the big events- If you’re hosting Thanksgiving, you’ll have higher food bills, but you can cut back by not buying new decorations or a new outfit.
  • Get to coupon clipping-Load up on chances to save, but remember that just because you have a coupon for Cheez-Its doesn’t mean you need to buy them.
  • Fight cravings- An easy way to save? Make your own healthy meals at home and pass on restaurants and take out.
  • Take stock of your gift cards- If you still have a stash of gift cards from last Christmas, now’s the time to break them out and use them … as long as you have enough on them to pay for your entire purchase.
  • Cut back on your vices- So no Starbucks trips or happy hour drinks after work. No-spend November is the time to become best friends with your home coffee pot and drink the bottles of wine you’ve stockpiled.
  • Change your social scene- This month will be low-key weekends and nights at home, so you can catch up on Netflix and reading, unless you want to go out and stick to drinking water.
  • Put on those walking shoes- Save on Ubers and gas by walking where you need to go. It’s just one month of being thrifty, you got this.

One Drink a Day is Worse for Your Heart Than Binge Drinking: Study

One glass of wine a day is worse for the heart than binge drinking, a study has revealed. Frequent but minimal drinkers are more likely to develop atrial fibrillation — an irregular heartbeat. It can cause shortness of breath and chest pains and raise the risk of a stroke five-fold. Scientists in South Korea warned this could be “dangerous” after studying the drinking habits of almost ten million people. They asked the participants, who underwent a national health check-up in 2009, how many times they indulged per week, the amount of alcohol in each session and the amount overall. The participants were followed up until 2017 to see if they had a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation. And the researchers found that the risk of atrial fibrillation increased by eight percent for every drink over a week, but the number of sessions was the strongest risk factor. And those who drank every day had a 40 percent higher risk than those who consumed alcohol twice a week.

Airline Completes Longest Non-Stop Flight Of Over 19 Hours

Most people who travel like to do so by flying non-stop to their destination, but there are some cities that take too long to get to...until now.

History was made as Qantas Airlines completed the very first non-stop commercial flight from New York to Sydney, Australia in 19 hours and 16 minutes. The 10,066-mile journey was the first nonstop commercial flight connecting the two cities.

The flight carried 49 passengers and crew. Qantas used this test flight to “run a series of experiments” to measure the effects of long-haul travel on pilots, passengers and airline crew, It also will help them determine whether or not it to add the nonstop New York-to-Sydney flight to passengers.

They plan on testing London to Sydney next and if approved, the flights could commence by 2022 or 2023.

Is It Really Camping If There’s Wi-Fi and Food Trucks At The Campground?

Food trucks. Wi-Fi. Hot showers. Those campground upgrades could be coming to a national park near you. The Interior Department is reviewing recommendations to modernize campgrounds at national parks. The recommendations posted online this week come from an advisory committee created under former Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke that has been looking at ways for private businesses to operate on public lands. Redesigning some campgrounds, and adding running water, tent and cabin rentals, food trucks, extended family sites and Wi-Fi at select parks also could boost revenue and encourage more people to stay overnight, the committee said.

  • Would you be more apt to go camping if there were food trucks and Wi-Fi at the campgrounds?

Artificial Skin Phone Covers Are A Thing- We’re so close to our phones that someone’s decided to make them feel like they’re an extension of our body.

How are they doing it? With a skin-like phone case that responds to touch.Marc Teyssinerand his colleagues developed an artificial skin that can sense sliding, stretching, and rotation. Teyssier says the “Skin-On Interface” design came about after he wanted to be able to pinch his phone.

The skin associates different types of touches to different emotions, like tapping means seeking attention. The next step for the three devices they have created -- phone case, computer touch pad, and smart watch -- is to add hair and temperature control to make it more realistic.
