How To Respond When A Coworker Adds Your Boss To An Email

If passive aggressiveness was a sport, work emails would be the big leagues.Who hasn’t been hit with a catty “per my last message” when we’ve missed something or ended a long email with a “warm regards” when what we really mean is“I wish I could slap you through this screen, Karen.”

Of course, the ultimate showstopper in a passive-aggressive coworker’s bag of tricks is CC’ing your boss into an email chain. Like a tattletale from grade school, they somehow think bringing the boss into the situation is going to get them brownie points and get you atime-out.But how do you deal with this awkward situation?

  • Ask your boss if they want to be involved. There’s a good chance they don’t even want to be involved. Forward the CC’d email to your boss, CC your coworker, and ask “Do you want to be looped in on this?” This gives them an out and also highlights how absurd your coworker getting them involved was in the first place.

It may seem like you’re turning the situation from passive toactive aggressive, but REALLY really? It’s your best option. Are you just going to continue to let your coworker keep the CC party going proving them right? Are you going to hit reply without CC’ing your boss making it seem like you’re being sneaky?

Honestly, none of these are great, but by taking control of the situation you might end up being the rest of the office’s hero.
