Second-hand Christmas is in full swing! What started as a different way to do gift giving this year, might just have to be a tradition! It's really been so fun!
My latest mission was to find something for "Mr. Hannah." Normally, we don't do gifts for one another since we live in a tiny house on wheels and space is limited, but one or two more items in the house won't hurt.
- I had to get him a flannel, as I knew that would make his lumberjack heart sing. I found a color he somehow managed not to have yet, too! For $6,99 at Savers!
- And then I scored a gently used Eddie Bauer hunter green sweater - he's going to look like such a dapper dude, for $12.99!
- And, of course, something to wrap it in. I found this fun, burlap sack that I can reuse for grocery shopping and once the Christmas season is done, use it to wrap next year. For $2.99!
The rules:
- Gifts have to be second-hand- be it Savers, Goodwill, a neighborhood thrift store - no matter where it comes from, it has to have had a previous owner.
- Gifts total no more than $20 per person- this makes it affordable to shop for everyone in the family without the post-shopping guilt
- Wrapping has to be sustainable- this could be newspaper, decorated brown paper, a fun tin (second-hand, of course), etc.
The benefits:
> You're avoiding consumerism. You're not perpetuating the cycle of creating new products.
> It's a treasure hunt! You really don't know what you'll find into when you go thrifting - that's the fun of it!
Shopping tip: Have a general gift idea for the person you're shopping for. Don't be too specific as it's unlikely you'll find exactly what you're hoping for. For example, I told my family that I'd love cooking supplies - Pyrex dishes with the click on tops, neutral, cozy sweaters, used KitchenAid mixer (dream on! lol), etc.
I'll share my finds as we get closer to the big day here.
