How To Create Things To Look Forward To Right Now

Feeling bummed about all the cancelled plans and not having anything on the calendar to look forward to? Everything’s on hold because of the coronavirus and it’s making coping with social isolation harder. With no upcoming birthday parties, weekend trips, dinner dates, and happy hours on the horizon, we need something positive to focus on. So we have to create things to look forward to that we can actually do in the current conditions, and these may help.

  • Put upcoming TV, movie, and book releases on your calendar- A lot of our favorite planned programming took a hit because of the pandemic, but thankfully, we have streaming services to keep us entertained. So find the things you want to watch and read that are coming soon and start counting the days.
  • Save certain treats or activities for “special” occasions - If time has basically become an illusion for you, try to restore some balance by saving some of your favorite things for special times that you designate. It can be anything from burning your fancy candle on Friday nights to having breakfast for dinner on Mondays, it’s just a way to make it feel more special.
  • Make your weekends feel like weekends- If you feel like all the days blend together and you’re missing that weekend feeling, making some distinctions between work days and days off can help. We’re not suggesting wearing businesswear to work on the couch, but you could try not checking work email over the weekend, or making some “work PJs” and others “lounge PJs” to break things up.
  • Focus on something waaay down the line- We’re talking so far in the future, it’ll definitely be on the other side of this, like planning a vacation for two years from now.
  • Send emails or letters- Reaching out to friends and loved ones this way will give you something to look forward to when you check the mail and your inbox.
  • Order yourself something special- Nothing impulsive or random, be mindful about it, and try to support smaller businesses if you can.
  • Pick up an engrossing video game, TV show, or book- Little things can bring us joy, so let yourself get immersed in something entertaining that leaves you wanting to come back for more.
