How To Ace Your Virtual Job Interview

A new survey has found that nearly nine out of 10 employers in the U.S. have started conducting interviews virtually. So if you’re in the job market right now, landing your new gig is more than likely going to require a good showing on Zoom. Here’s some advice from career change consultantJoseph Liuthat just might set you above all the rest of the candidates when it comes to a digital evaluation.

  • Where To Look. The goal here is to mimic eye contact so when you’re speaking, look right at your camera. That way when your interviewer is looking at their screen to check you out, it’s like you're looking at them. If you want to sneak a peek at how they’re reacting to your answers, try to move the window for the chat as close to your front-facing cam as possible.
  • Take Notes The Old Fashioned Way.When you’re doing your intros, ask your interviewer if it’s ok if you take notes, and show them your pen and paper. If you skip this step, they’re probably going to start wondering why it looks like you're staring down at your lap the whole interview. And you probably guessed why writing notes is preferred to typing if you’ve ever been on a Zoom calling with your friend who smashes buttons when they type.
  • Skip The Background. If you’re thinking you’re impressing anyone by doing a Google image search for “amazing home office” and dropping one of those pics as your background, you’re wrong. They never look legit and it’s only going to make the hiring manager wonder what you’re hiding. Liu says at best they’re “distracting” and at worst they’re “embarrassing.”

There’s plenty of other things to consider for your next virtual interview and plenty more tips to help through themHERE.

You Can Now Hire A Personal Driver With “Uber Hourly”

While Uber is great, if you have a lot of places to go it can be a pain to constantly have to call a ride each time you’re done at a stop. Well, that’s no longer going to be a problem.

The ride sharing app has just launched a new service they’re calling “Uber Hourly,” a new pay-by-the-hour service in which customers can hire a personal driver, paying $50 an hour, and during that time they can make as many stops as they want, with the driver committed to them for the whole time. Even better, the drivers can be booked for up to eight hours at a time.

Uber passengers have always had the option to book a driver for multiple stops, it’s the $50 set rate that’s different with the new service. Folks can book it just like they do a regular Uber, with “Uber Hourly” listed below Uber Pool, UberX and UberXL.

So far the service is only available in 12 cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Seattle, Orlando and Philadelphia. It is expected to come to more cities in the coming weeks.

Cinema Chain AMC Warns it May Not Survive the Pandemic

Movie theater chain AMC is warning that it may not survive the coronavirus pandemic, which has shuttered its theaters and led film studios to explore releasing more movies directly to viewers over the internet. It’s the latest danger sign for the theater business in North America, which was under pressure even before the pandemic.

It has gotten a boost by raising ticket prices and revamping theatergoing into a more luxurious experience with drinks and meals, but admissions have been gradually declining since 2005. The box office has become home mostly to blockbuster films: Sequels, remakes and superhero movies dominate. Meanwhile, the rise of streaming services — Netflix and a growing stable of rivals — is providing new competition. The coronavirus pandemic threw in more challenges.

AMC, the largest U.S. chain, said it has enough cash to reopen its theaters this summer as planned. But if it’s not allowed to reopen, it will need more money, which it may not be able to borrow. Film delays are another concern. AMC noted that people may be afraid to go to theaters, but hopes the desire for social distancing is temporary and that people will want to go to the movies again.
