A new survey has found that nearly nine out of 10 employers in the U.S. have started conducting interviews virtually. So if you’re in the job market right now, landing your new gig is more than likely going to require a good showing on Zoom. Here’s some advice from career change consultantJoseph Liuthat just might set you above all the rest of the candidates when it comes to a digital evaluation.
- Where To Look. The goal here is to mimic eye contact so when you’re speaking, look right at your camera. That way when your interviewer is looking at their screen to check you out, it’s like you're looking at them. If you want to sneak a peek at how they’re reacting to your answers, try to move the window for the chat as close to your front-facing cam as possible.
- Take Notes The Old Fashioned Way.When you’re doing your intros, ask your interviewer if it’s ok if you take notes, and show them your pen and paper. If you skip this step, they’re probably going to start wondering why it looks like you're staring down at your lap the whole interview. And you probably guessed why writing notes is preferred to typing if you’ve ever been on a Zoom calling with your friend who smashes buttons when they type.
- Skip The Background. If you’re thinking you’re impressing anyone by doing a Google image search for “amazing home office” and dropping one of those pics as your background, you’re wrong. They never look legit and it’s only going to make the hiring manager wonder what you’re hiding. Liu says at best they’re “distracting” and at worst they’re “embarrassing.”
There’s plenty of other things to consider for your next virtual interview and plenty more tips to help through themHERE.
