Why Do Some People Get More Mosquito Bites Than Others?
While summer is great, there is at least one thing to hate about it – mosquito bites. Of course, some people are more prone to getting bitten by those pesky bugs, but have you ever wondered why that is?
A recent survey finds that 77% of people say mosquitos have interrupted their summer activities. And it turns out there are lots of reasons why some people are more prone to mosquito bites than others.
According to research, mosquitoes are attracted to:
- People with higher body temperatures.
- People who are active during exercise, because they produce more carbon dioxide and sweat containing lactic acid, and have higher body temperatures.
- People with higher concentrations of steroids or cholesterol on their skin’s surface.
- People with higher levels of stress (they can detect hormones related to stress).
- Pregnant women because of their higher body temperatures and production of more CO2.
- People wearing dark clothes, like reds, blacks and blues.
- Alcohol drinkers because blood vessels dilate, increasing skin temperature. Also, ethanol content in sweat attracts them.
So, what are the best ways to keep yourself from getting bitten? Steps to take include:
- Shower after exercising, to reduce sweat and decrease temperature
- Cover exposed skin
- Wear light-colored clothing
- Increase air movement on decks and patios using oscillating fans
- Of course, use EPA-registered mosquito repellent

Italian Village Offers Tourists Free Summer Stay
Still dreaming of the day you finally get to take that trip to Italy you’ve always wanted? If you’re willing to travel this summer, there’s a village in the European country that wants to make it easier for you to get there. San Giovanni in Molise is offering tourists a free week-long stay this summer.
The quaint village is full of empty houses because of depopulation and they’re trying to entice visitors to come stay in them. The project is offering 40 one-week stays in three of the charming homes between July and September. San Giovanni is located two hours from Naples and Rome and their hope is that the free accommodations will encourage tourists to come and make the most of the region’s culture, food and drink, and surroundings.
Anyone who doesn’t already live in Molise - or have any relatives or property there - can apply and they make the process really simple. All you have to do is fill out aformexplaining why you want to discover the area and then hope you’re chosen as one of the lucky winners. If all goes well in San Giovanni, the project will extend to other villages in Molise, so there could be more free stays up for grabs in the future.
