We’ve all heard the general rule that one dog year is the equivalent of seven human years. But a new study out of University of California San Diego School of Medicinesuggeststhat’s not necessarily true. According to a press release on the study, “Since the two species don’t age at the same rate over their lifespans, it turns out it’s not a perfectly linear comparison, as the 1:7 years rule-of-thumb would suggest.” Instead the scientists, using Labrador Retrievers, came up with a new “epigenetic clock,” which determines an organism’s age based on differing patterns of aging. The study noted that Labradors tend to age quickly when they are young, but the process slows down when they get older.
