While a lot of us wish we could save more money it seems plenty of us are wasting cash each year on single use household items, like toilet paper, paper towels and such. And when you hear just how much you are spending, you may want to start looking for alternatives.
According to a new survey:
- Americans spend $11,198 on toilet paper over the course of their lifetime, which means they are basically flushing money down the toilet.
- The average person spends about $182 a year, although that went up an additional $15 a month during the COVID crisis (if you were able to find TP that is).
- Americans use about 159 rolls of TP annually.
- But toilet paper isn’t the only single use item costing folks a lot of money each year.
- The average amount of money spent on single use items over the course of a lifetime include:
- Paper towels – $10,518.82
- Hygienic wipes – $9,469.15
- Tissues – $9,454.37
- Plastic bags – $9,402.62
- Paper plates – $8,619.07
- Disposable razors – $8,537.76
- Plastic cutlery – $8,005.54
But even though most of us are wasting our money on products that are bad for the environment, it doesn’t mean we feel good about it.
- In fact, three quarters of those polled say they try to lead a “sustainable” lifestyle
- 69% feel guilty about their use of single use products.
- The most common ways Americans embrace reusable alternatives include:
- Reusable grocery bags (62%)
- Reusable coffee mug or cup (61%)
- Reusable water bottle (59%)
- Most people say the kitchen is their “most sustainable” room in their house, while the bathroom is the “least sustainable.”
