Nice guys don't finish last, a new study finds
The old adage "nice guys finish last" has just been turned on its head, thanks to researchers at the University of Berkeley's Haas School of Business.
By comparing the university-to-career tracks of "disagreeable people" for 14 years, the scientists discovered that selfish, manipulative and combative people aren't more likely to succeed in the workplace than "generous, trustworthy, and nice" people.
The researchers point out that disagreeable people aren't incapable of succeeding in their career, but that their cutthroat tendencies didn't help them vs. their agreeable counterparts, because the latter group gets along with people better.
"I was surprised at the consistency of the findings," says said study co-author and Berkeley Haas professorCameron Anderson. "No matter the individual or the context, disagreeableness did not give people an advantage in the competition for power -- even in more cutthroat, 'dog-eat-dog' organizational cultures."
The findings from the pair of 14-year longitudinal studies were just published in theProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Would You Dump Your Date Over A Bad First Kiss?
Have you ever stopped dating someone after a bad first kiss? Australian relationship expertLouanneWardasked members of her Facebook group,She Said, He Said, how important that first smooch is and if they’ve ever ended things with someone who wasn’t good at it. And it turns out, a lot of people put a lot of importance on a quality lip lock.
Lots of people responded that kissing can be a “major turn off” if it’s done badly and some say it “determines a lot” about intimacy. “A kiss is the most important thing for sensual connection,” one woman writes. “If the kiss is good, then the rest is even better.” And another explains, “You can tell more about a person from that first kiss than you can from two hours of conversation.” And several people say a sloppy first kiss is a deal-breaker that sends someone straight to the friend zone.
But others don’t put so much pressure on that first kiss because they say people can get better at it over time. Several people point out that they can “teach” their partner to be a better kisser and they would give their date another chance. One woman explains that she wouldn’t stop seeing someone because of the actual kiss, but adds she “wouldn’t revisit the date if there was a general lack of chemistry or a weird vibe.”
