On Tuesday, April 20, Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis Police officer who knelt on George Floyd's neck for more than 9 minutes, was found guilty of all three charges against him. The verdict, CNN’s Don Lemon shared with Ryan Seacrest, marks a step “towards accountability.”

“I think the video, most people agree, I think it’s pretty obvious what it is but you never know,” Lemon reflected on awaiting the verdict. “Jurys are made up of 12 different personalities … you never know.”

Chauvin will be sentenced in eight weeks. He faces up to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, up to 25 years for third-degree murder and up to 10 years for manslaughter.

“I think it’s a step towards accountability, Ryan,” Lemon added. “I can’t say that it’s full justice because we have so much work to be done on policing, on race, on seeing each other’s humanity, on what we’re going to do with the police department and their interaction and what their role should be in communities. … I believe we need to figure out how we best use police officers in this country.”

The trial of three other former police officers who were involved in Floyd's death is set to begin on August 23 in the same Hennepin County government building where Chauvin was tried.
