In the 1600s, the Vatican ruled that beaver meat was a fish, as far as Lent was concerned.  The bishop of Quebec put the question to the Vatican because Canada was using furs for trade and that left a lot of uneaten beaver available. How come? As the semi-aquatic rodent was a skilled swimmer, the Church declared that the beaver was a fish.
