Study: Don’t Let Your Dog Sleep With You in Bed

Ruff news: Man’s best friend may keep you from fetching sleep. That’s the takeaway of a small but provocative study titled “The Effect of Dogs on Human Sleep in the Home Sleep Environment” in the September issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Investigators studied 40 healthy adults with pooches but no sleep disorders over five months. Subjects and their dogs wore activity trackers to track their sleeping habits for seven nights. Researchers found that “humans with a single dog in their bedroom maintained good sleep efficiency; however, the dog’s position on/off the bed made a difference. ”Bottom line: Regardless of breed or size, dogs in the bedroom was fine. Canines actually in the bed, not so much.

  • Would you ever consider kicking your dog out of your bed?
  • Would you rather have your dog in your bed than your significant other?
