Text Messaging Turns 25!

A worldwide obsession has been around for a quarter century.

Text messaging is now 25 years old. The first text message was sent on December 3rd, 1992 when British engineer Neil Papworth to Richard Jarvis, an executive at British telecom Vodafone, was was attending his company's holiday party in Newbury, England.

an engineer typed Merry Christmas on a computer and sent it to a cell phone. He didn’t get a reply because phones didn’t have the capability to yet. Text messaging really took off after smartphones arrived. The idea for texting first merged in 1984.

Text messages in the U.S. increased from 12 and-a-half billion a month in 2006 to 45-billion a year later. This past June, more than 780-billion text messages were sailing around the country. Source: CNET
