There are all kinds of ways to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Some bundle up, brave the crowd of a million, and watch the ball drop in Times Square in New York City, others stay in and watch the countdown on TV from the comfort of their couch. But folks in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania have their own unique tradition on December 31: every year their town drops a giant Peep to mark the New Year.
Why a Peep - the iconic candy that’s mostly seen around Easter? Just Born, the company who created the marshmallowy treat is located in Bethlehem, so the town honors that with their annual “PeepsFest” on December 30th and 31st.
And the big event is when the enormous 400-pound Peep is dropped at 5:15 p.m., followed by a big fireworks display. But no one gets to snack on this Peep, it’s actually made of fiberglass, not sugar-coated marshmallow. That would be one huge sugar high, though.
