HBO Max Picks Up 'Pretty Little Liars' Reboot

On Thursday (September 24), HBO Max announced they picked up a Pretty Little Liars reboot series. The original show, which was based on the book series of the same name by Sara Shepard, aired on Freeform from 2010 to 2017. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin was given a direct-to-series for the streaming platform. The series will be produced by Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, as well as Lindsay Calhoon Bring, who also served as co-executive producer/writer on Sabrina.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin will be set in a new town have a "new secrets and new liars," according to a press release. "Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in the present day, a group of disparate teen girls find themselves tormented by an unknown assailant and made to pay for the secret sin their parents committed two decades ago...as well as their own," the press release continues. "In the dark, coming-of-RAGE, horror-tinged drama Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, we find ourselves miles away from Rosewood, but within the existing Pretty Little Liars universe — in a brand new town, with a new generation of Little Liars."

Aguirre-Sacasa and Bring said they're both "such huge fans of what [original series creator] I. Marlene King and her iconic cast created, we knew that we had to treat the original series as canon and do something different. So we’re leaning into the suspense and horror in this reboot, which hopefully will honor what the fans loved about the hit series, while weaving in new, unexpected elements."

Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max, said the pair of producers are "expanding the Pretty Little Liars universe with more murder, mysteries, and scandal" in the new series. She added that she "can't wait" to see what they bring to the HBO Max catalogue with this new take on Pretty Little Liars.

As of now, there aren't any more details about the show, including cast and premiere date. Are you excited to see A make a comback?
