Event planners weigh-in: should you cancel your major event?

The event industry is getting hit hard right now. With all the travel restrictions, shelter-in-place orders, gathering limits or straight-up bans… March 2020 went from being people’s potential wedding anniversary date to just another day really fast. If you have a big event planned in the next few months, you’re undoubtedly stressed out, so here’s some advice from expert planners that may help.

  • Reschedule. If your event is sitting between now and April, it’s time to make some adjustments. Event plannerKristine Cookesays most of her clients are already calling to find a new date or canceling completely.Keep in mind that if you’re planning a big event like a wedding, there are a lot of moving pieces, and that’s why Cooke says it’s “nearly impossible to meet the original expectations” so be prepared to make some cuts.
  • The Sooner The Better.“The longer a bride waits to choose a new date, the more limited she will be,” says Cooke. “Saturdays are a hot choice for weddings, the majority of those fall dates are already taken.” How does a Friday night or off-month event sound instead?Hopefully, not too awful if you’re still trying to get your 2020 party on.
  • Communicate To Your Guests ASAP.If your budget allows, the planners say a mailed postcard would be nice, but if not, digital communications work too. Wedding plannerNicole Heinbaughrecommends usingThe Knotor even a private Facebook Group to give out your new event info as things change. And prepare yourself emotionally because some people are going to be changing their RSVP from Yes to No.
