Women Flex Their Brainpower More Than Men-A historic study finds that female brains are more active than male brains.

The leader of the largest functional brain imaging survey ever conducted says the findings are important to understand the different risks men and women face from brain disorders such as Alzheimer's. Women have higher rates of Alzheimer's disease and depression.

High tech imaging equipment like a SPECT was used to see the activity and it was vastly different.

The study shows more activity for women in the parts of the brain that control focus, motivation, and behavior. Men's brains are shown to be more active in regions affecting vision and coordination. The study is reported in yesterday's edition of the "Journal of Alzheimer's Disease."Source: UPI

People Eat Parasitic Worms On Purpose!

Thousands of people across the world have bought parasitic worms online and eaten them to try to treat conditions from depression to inflammatory bowel disease. When researcher Detlev Goj of Thai company Tanawisa surveyed people who were treating themselves this way, he estimates there were about 7,000 people eating worms to deal with health issues.

The idea is that infecting yourself with parasites is no big deal because until we got better at hygiene, these little things commonly lived in our bodies. And while inside us, they evolved to survive in our guts by secreting substances - and that stuff the worms make is actually good for our immune systems. So there are possible health benefits to having parasites!

And now, a kind of pig worm is being analyzed to be approved for sale as a food product in Germany. Goj hopes to sell small vials of 500, 1000, or 2500 pig whipworm eggs, to be consumed in food or drinks. This would be the first live worm product approved for sale as a food ingredient in Europe.

Some experts say the worm therapy is pseudoscience cult therapy, but others say eating worm eggs is probably no worse for us than other dietary supplements. Does it sound nasty? Absolutely. Does it help treat autoimmune and mental health conditions? That’s still up for debate. But because they’ll be sold as a food ingredient and not a medical drug in Germany, they only need to be considered safe. And you have to be brave enough to actually choke down some of them for them to work - so we’re giving it a hard pass, thanks.

Dear Dave FB message

Hi everyone! I’m a big fan of the show and wondering if you can give me some advice.

My ex-boyfriend and I broke up a little over a month ago, but we are still living together because we are locked in a lease and neither of us can afford to pay rent in two places. It’s awkward, but we mostly stay out of each other’s way.

I’ve started dating again and I’d like to have the new guy over. He still lives at home with his parents so his place isn’t the most convenient place to hang out either. Would it be awful to have the new guy over while I’m still living with my ex? How should I handle the situation?

Thank!

Megan

Back-To-School Hack: How To Make Sure That Backpack Isn’t Heavy-Backpacks are essential in helping kids get through the school day, but they could cause harm too.

Every day about 80 kids are injured by their packs. Most of the time it’s due to being too weighted down. Here’s what you need to know; they should be no more that 10 to 15-percent of your child’s body weight. So if a kid is 50 pounds, the pack is not over seven and a half.

It’s not just what you put in the packs, it’s how you wear them. The top should not be lower that the shoulders. If your child comes home with too many books, try and resolve the homework issue with their teacher.

Happy schooling!Source: Today

Loneliness Is Deadlier Than Obesity, Study Suggests

Loneliness is deadlier than obesity and should be considered a major public health hazard, the biggest ever review into the problem has suggested. Researchers in the US looked at 218 studies into the health effects of social isolation and loneliness involving nearly four million people. They discovered that lonely people had a 50 percent increased risk of early death, compared to those with good social connections. In contrast, obesity raises the chance of dying before the age of 70 by around 30 percent.

Lead author Dr Julianne Holt-Lunstad, Professor of Psychology at Brigham Young University, Utah, said people should be preparing for retirement socially as well as financially, because for many people the workplace is their biggest source of companionship. “Being connected to others socially is widely considered a fundamental human need—crucial to both well-being and survival,” she said. “Extreme examples show infants in custodial care who lack human contact fail to thrive and often die, and indeed, social isolation or solitary confinement has been used as a form of punishment.

“Yet an increasing portion of the population now experiences isolation regularly.”

According to the Campaign To End Loneliness, around 17 percent of older people see friends, family and neighbours less than once a week, while one in 10 go for a month at a time without seeing any loved ones. A recent survey by the charity found that for two fifths of older people, around 3.9 million, view the television as their main source of company.
