Food Expiration Labels Are Changing

Someone finally decided to standardize expiration labels on food!

Between the “sell by,” “use by,” display until,” “best before,” and other labels that tell us how long food is good for, we’ve become very confused. That’s why some of the biggest companies have now approved two standards: “use by” and “best if used by.”

The change was made for a big reason: food waste. A World Resource Institute press release, “an estimated 1.3 billion tons of food worldwide is lost or wasted each year.” For a U.S. household, that translates to an average of $1,500 spent on uneaten, expired food each year.

The change will happen by 2020. Source: Today
